Ambition in action at the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge

Curiosity, ambition and a willingness to tackle the unfamiliar: 77 Guildhouse students put all three into practice in this year’s UKMT Senior Maths Challenge.

Run by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT), the Senior Mathematical Challenge is a national competition for students in Year 13 and below. Participants have 90 minutes to solve 25 mathematical problems, testing their logical reasoning, precision and ability to think creatively.

The challenge encourages students to think beyond the curriculum and apply their knowledge in new ways. For our students, it was an opportunity to explore unfamiliar problems, test different approaches and stretch their mathematical thinking.

Students prepared both independently and through Maths Club, building confidence and sharpening their problem-solving skills. That preparation provided a foundation for a competition where each question presents a fresh challenge.

This year also introduced a change to the format: the final three questions required numerical answers rather than multiple-choice responses. It remains to be seen how this change will affect results, adding another point of interest when the outcomes are announced.

Our students embraced the experience enthusiastically. Many enjoy the challenge for its own sake the satisfaction of working through a difficult problem and finding a solution. They also recognise the value of participating in academic competitions as they prepare their university and UCAS applications, giving them an experience that demonstrates their enthusiasm for mathematics beyond the classroom.

We’re proud to see so many students pursuing their interests and approaching a demanding challenge with determination and a positive attitude.

Well done to all 77 students who took part and represented Guildhouse.

We look forward to sharing the results and celebrating our students’ achievements, including any Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. Once the results are announced, we’ll also hear directly from students and teachers about their experiences.
