International Women in Engineering Day

At Guildhouse School we are always in pursuit of providing forward thinking education, that considers our ever growing and changing world. We aim to set our students up to be an influential part of that world.

Friday 23rd June marks the 9th anniversary of the international day for women in engineering. It is a day dedicated to celebrating the fantastic female engineers who have shaped the world we live in, while also bringing awareness to the barriers women in engineering face. It encourages young women with a passion for STEM subjects to pursue a career in them.

Women in Engineering: The Facts!

International Women in Engineering Day got us thinking about how to uplift the voices of the young women who will help create the future of STEM.

We chatted with two young women who are currently sitting their A-Levels, with the goal of specialising in a STEM field at University.

What do you want to study and why?

I want to study architecture because all of the earthquakes going on in turkey have affected me, but before that, it was because I think it makes a change in people’s lives and that’s really great.

Elif from Turkey

I want to study cardiology. Medicine is a very challenging field and I think that it will give me the opportunity to have a good impact on people’s lives. I have always wanted a job that’s interactive and where I have contact with people.

Adela from Albania

Is there anyone in your industry that inspires you?

Zaha Hadid was the person who inspired me the most. She makes unimaginable buildings.

Elif from Turkey

Should more women be encouraged to join your industry?

It would be perfect if we encourage more women to study medicine. Firstly, so we can break down the stereotype of gender in medicine. I think women have lots of qualities that are important in medicine.

Adela from Albania

I think more women should be involved because there is a stereotype that men work more as architects, engineers or in maths than women and we should break that.

Elif from Turkey

Whilst female voices are still massively underrepresented within Engineering, we are marching steadily towards progress. Education opens pathways to innovation and at Guildhouse School we set our students up to be pioneers of industry and journey out into the world and make a change.

Here at Guildhouse School, we offer high quality teaching that reflects our pursuit of forward-thinking academic excellence. We encourage all our students to be curious and thoughtful learners and offer a wide and varied curriculum that supports students in pursuing their future goals.
